About the Workshop

Led by Jungian astrologer Retro Ade, this workshop explores one of the earliest known authored texts: a myth of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love and war, who ancient astronomers connected to the planet Venus. Inanna’s Descent to the Underworld is one of the most retold goddess myths throughout antiquity and was associated with Venus' 40-day retrograde period. As a group we will read a translation of the text, discuss its archetypal symbolism, and explore some journaling prompts to help frame our experiences of Venus’ Retrograde period throughout October and November 2026.

Venus Retrogrades, like Inanna’s time in the underworld, are periods where we redefine our values surrounding love, relationships, creativity, and desire. The story of the goddess’ transformation through death and rebirth reflects the cyclical nature of these areas in our own lives. This workshop proposes a reading of Venus beyond its stereotypical meanings connected to femininity and receptivity. Venus, like our values, relationships, and desires to create, is a multifaceted, autonomous, sometimes paradoxical force that is lost and found again, continually redefining itself as new shapes and forms. We will be reading from the 2001 translation by Jungian analyst Betty De Shong Meador.

Adrianna (”Ade”) is a Philadelphia-based artist, astrological counselor, and the voice behind Retro Ade Astrology. Her practice blends ancient mythology and Jungian archetypal astrology to offer holistic, sensitive, and carefully calculated insight focused on the present.
